On Friday, February 6, at 4:00 PM, the opening event of Ilze Onzule’s photography exhibition “Encountered” will take place at the Polish House. It is a story about people who remain in our memories.

Ilze Onzule was born in 1967 in Cēsis. She has been photographing since 2019, and since the autumn of 2021 she has been leading the association Stāstnīca. As Ilze herself says, the “father” of her photography is her husband Linards Onzuls, while her “godfathers” are photographers Ģirts Dreimanis and Anatols Kauškalis.

Portraiture is the way the exhibition’s author observes and encounters human hearts. Each portrait is a moment in which a person is not a model, but a bearer of life and a story. “Encountered” is a series of portraits in which the viewer enters into a quiet dialogue with strangers who become familiar, and with their own inner world.

These are not staged photographs – they were born in everyday moments, reminding us that encounters are not accidental and that a human face speaks louder than words.

“Encountered” is Ilze Onzule’s third exhibition. Her first exhibition, “Daring Is Beautiful…”, took place at the Ceriņi Library, a branch of the Latgale Central Library, in the spring of 2022. The next exhibition, “Čiekuru Street Stories in Photographs”, was held in the summer of 2025.

The photography exhibition at the Polish House (30 Varšavas Street) will be on view from February 6 to March 2.
